Waimushan (外木山風景區)

A favorite among Keelung locals because of its swimming area, wide vista of the ocean, and nearby food choices, Waimushan is a great spot to check out for a northern Taiwan sunset.

From the fishing harbor, the smokestacks of Baimiweng can be seen close by to the east, and to the west the coastal road goes northward towards Yehliu, which you can see jutting out into the ocean if you look closely.

Above the swimming area, the sky’s colors will begin to light up with the setting sun’s hues when it’s time, if it’s not too foggy. If you’re lucky, you’ll also see red/orange reflected sunset skies to the ocean east of you. As long as the sun is somewhat visible, with the dramatic coastline and the mountains beside you, you’ll be content with the sight in front of you as the sun sets.

Getting to Waimushan is pretty easy by car, as there are multiple places to park along the coast and a big parking lot at the fishing harbor.

If you live in Taipei, it’s not too hard to take public transporation to Waimushan. First, take a train to Keelung Station. From there, take bus 302 and get off at Zhongshan Senior High School. You’ll have to walk at least 10 minutes to get to the fishing harbor, and longer if you want to go to some of the other scenic points along the coast.
