Up in Tianmu is a popular hiking destination, the Tianmu Historic Trail. From this trail, you can see some pretty good sunsets, along with nature (including monkeys!)
Most people hike from Tianmu to Chinese Culture University. The beginning part of the hike has a lot of steep stairs and is not the easiest, but closer to the top it levels off. Depending on how fast you walk, it can take 1-2+ hours round trip.
The sunset views both along the way and at Chinese Culture University are great. There is a scenic vista near CCU that’s a popular place to overlook the city below, and there are some other viewpoints on the road nearby.
Getting here with a car or scooter is quickest, though you can also take the Zhongshan Main Line bus from Taipei Main Station and get off about ten minutes away from the start of the trail.
From the top, you can also take a bus back. The 260 Shuttle (which will take you to Taipei Main Station) runs until 10:00 pm and stops down the street from the university.
