Shalu District is a cool place not far from Taichung airport that has wide-open vistas of the western part of the city, ocean, and, sky. As it is in the countryside, it’s a great destination for a sunset and night view if you have a car or scooter.
There are a few different spots to check out, linked below. Each gives a panoramic view, and you can check go from one to the other easily. The first and third are popular date spots.
Of all three, you might stay at the 黑森林景觀咖啡 restaurant/cafe the longest. It’s roomy and comfortable, and you see the view from a big window while enjoying a meal/drink. There’s also a viewing platform there you can go out on.
The tree (九天夕陽之樹) is, well, just a little tree that sits in the middle of a field with the city in the background. It looks dramatic at sunset time, I suppose.
The third spot (月老廟夜景) is a popular place for night views.
This is a good place to wander around since there’s no obstructions. Walk/drive to where it looks cool and take pictures from there.
Depending where you’re coming from, it will take 20-40 minutes or more to drive here. It takes about 30 minutes from HSR Taichung Station, for reference.
There is ample parking at a lot at the restaurant/café. From there you can walk to the tree, or you drive over there and park to the side. At the third spot you can park on the side of the road and take pictures from there.
